The Benefits of Drinking Water

1 Jul 2008

Sometimes we forget how important water is to our health; wellbeing, survival, and

weight loss.  Here are some very important facts to remind each of us why we should drink a healthy amount of the clear liquid each and everyday.

Did you know the average adult body is made up of 55 to 75% water?  Approximately 2/3’s of your body weight is water. Water is an essential part of how your body operates.  Your body requires a lot of water to help promote good health.  The lack of water can be the cause of many illnesses.  Without water your body can only survive for a few days.

Most people don’t drink enough water.  Ongoing dehydration may cause you to get sick.  Water helps regulate your body temperature and carries nutrients and oxygen to cells.  Water also helps to remove waste from your body.

Water also plays a very important part in your weight loss regiment.  Water has zero calories, zero fat, and zero carbohydrates.  Drinking a full glass of water before each meal will help suppress your appetite causing you to eat less at each meal.

It is said that for every twenty-five pounds overweight you are that you should add one glass of water to your regular eight glasses per day.

Water helps your body to metabolize the fat that is stored in your body.  Water plays an important part in your digestive system.  Constipation is just one sign that you are not drinking enough water.  Because water eliminates toxins in your body gastritis, pain from ulcers (as long as the ulcer is not perforated), and heartburn all decrease with increased water intake.

If you don’t drink enough water each day your body will start to retain the water it does receive.  To counteract this drink more water not less.  Did you know that an adult will lose nearly six pints or twelve cups of water every day?

Many people who are overweight also have complaints of joint pain.  Did you know that the more water you drink the less joint pain you should feel under normal circumstances? Water helps to lubricate the joints in effect causing less pain.

Dehydration of your body can happen very quickly.  If you begin to have dry mouth your body is telling you it’s already dehydrated.  The more water you drink the less you will feel like you have dry mouth.  However when your body is no longer dehydrated you will feel thirsty more often.

So in closing how much water should you drink each day?  You should drink at least sixty-four fluid ounces.  However if you are overweight add one eight ounce glass per twenty five pounds.
